M-Bot Cleaner: Marine Waste Cleaner Developed by 10-Year Old Kid

I am currently working towards Sustainable Development Goal 14 – Conserve and judiciously use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. My innovation M-Bot Cleaner (Marine Robot Cleaner) intends to provide vital protection (in a sustainable manner) to the marine habitats as it removes the waste from the surface of the water bodies which facilitates cleaner waters and improved marine life. M-Bot Cleaner is in the shape of a boat and floats with the aid of recycled water bottles. It can be operated remotely with a radio control.

Materials Used & Cost

  • Robotic Kit (CPU, 3 DC Motors, 3 Wheels, 6V Battery case, Remote transmitter & receiver board,  cables) – AED 450
  • Inflatable pool AED 50
  • Recycled materials – Water Bottles, popsicle sticks, thick plastic sheet, pencils

Working Principle

It is a prototype robot which is basically shaped like a boat and floats with the aid of recycled water bottles. It can be operated remotely with a radio control. Popsicle sticks are attached to 2 pencils which are in turn connected to the 2 DC motors that serve like a paddle to the boat to move in the water. A wheel with popsicle stick is connected to the third motor at the front to push the waste from the surface of water bodies into the storage basket.

Additional features can be enhanced by having solar panels instead of batteries and having GPS to send signals to M-Bot to move to a particular location in the ocean/river to collect wastes. Although this project could plausibly restore the purity of water, it nevertheless could be the initial step taken forward towards creating a better ecosystem.

We live on a blue planet, with oceans and seas covering more than 70 per cent of the earth’s surface. Oceans feed us, regulate our climate, and generate most of the oxygen we breathe. It is our duty and responsibility to remove marine wastes to ease the sufferings of aquatic organisms and to provide natural recreational environment and ecotourism opportunities for the humankind..

Word of Thanks

My sincere thanks to my school (Senior Leadership Team and teachers), parents, Ms. Sangita Ghosh and Ms. Shanti Padmanabhan from Vision Kids Training Center for their continuous building of my confidence and skills, guidance and support. Above all, I wish to thank the inspirational leaders of Abu Dhabi and Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) for their vision and belief in innovation being the change that the world needs to see!
