How to Install a Kitchen Faucet – A Complete Guide

Getting a new faucet

If you want to replace your faucet, it is compulsory that you get a new one that is compatible with the sinkholes. The sinks have 3-4 holes to set different faucets. If your removed faucet was fixed in three holes, you must have a new with a similar type. One-hole faucet may be fixed on multiple hole sink but you have to add a deck plate first.

If you want to save yourself from misfit, take your old faucet or its picture to the store as a reference and buy a new.

Removal of old faucet

It is just a game of minutes to remove an old kitchen faucet. You just need a basin wrench and someone to hold the faucet at the place. When you are ready with both, get started.

  • First of all, disconnect all the water connections to prevent wastage of water.
  • Turn off the under-sink valves and open the faucet to release any pressure. It will prevent water splashes that may wet your tools.
  • If you have a garbage disposal attached to the sink, also turn it off.
  • Now, ask your helper to hold the faucet at a place and you step in the cabinet with a flashlight and wrench to loosen the nuts. Don’t forget to place a bucket under the configuration to catch the water.
  • When all the mounting nuts are loosened, pull the faucet out of the holes.

It takes not more than 15 minutes and you successfully separate the faucet. Next is the turn for the installation of a new faucet.

New kitchen faucet installation

There are few easy steps you have to follow and you will have a new faucet installed in no more than half an hour. Let’s see what you have to do.

Step 1: Take the gasket out of the packing and place it on the foot of the faucet. If you don’t find it there, it must be already attached to it.

Step 2: Now, slide the shank and tailpipes from the hole and fix the faucet. Ask your partner to hold it correctly and you again take a flashlight to enter the cabinet.

Step 3: Attach the mounting nuts and washer to the shank and tight with your fingers first. When you are tightening this assembly, make sure that the faucet is not displaced and is correctly positioned. When the nuts are finger tightened and the faucet is accurately placed, take wrench or screwdriver and carefully tighten again.

Step 4: Now connect the water supply lines to cold and hot pipes. If you find the need for extra security, you can tape the threaded parts and connect, later on.

Step 5: Tighten the connections with a wrench and keep in mind that overtightening may ruin your efforts.

Step 6: For pull-down faucets, set a quick-connect hose to the supply line and attach the weight by pulling down on the hose. When you set every connection, make sure the faucet handle is turned off. Now remove the aerator from the faucet ad turn on the cold-water supply.

Step 8: Test the connections for leakage. You can finger test or take any tissue paper and place it at the junctions. If you feel any doubt, retighten to prevent future leakage.

Step 9: If every connection is perfectly attached, let the water running for a couple of minutes to clear the lines. Turn the faucet off and place the aerator.
