What is it Like Driving an Electric Car?

Are you thinking about making the switch to an electric car? This is something that many people are now doing and for good reason too. Going electric will help reduce your environmental impact, it will help to greatly reduce your motoring costs and there are now many different types to choose from along with an improving infrastructure.

Electric cars are also quite different to traditional vehicles, so what is it like to drive one?

1. No Gear Changes

In many ways, driving an electric car is similar to a regular car. The biggest difference however is that you do not need to change gears as there is no manual or automatic gearbox.

Electric cars are capable of delivering instant torque, which means that you do not need gears to keep your car in the right rev range. This means that they are much easier to drive and offer a smoother experience. If you are unsure whether or not to make the switch, you could also try leasing a car first to see if it is for you.

2. Braking Helps to Charge

One aspect that many people may be unfamiliar with is that when you press down on the brake pedal, the car will both slow down and top up the battery. In many electric cars, taking your foot off the “gas” will slow you down enough for most situations through using the car’s built-in energy capture system, which makes them again much easier to drive.

3. Quieter Driving Experience

Another noticeable aspect of driving an electric car is just how quiet it is. This can make the driving experience more relaxing and less stressful, plus it is easier to hear what people are saying, or even the radio when driving on the motorway.

While the quieter driving experience is mainly positive, you do need to be aware that it can pose a safety issue. Pedestrians and other road users will be less likely to hear you, so you need to be extra vigilant and always make yourself seen on the roads.

4. Charging Instead of Filling Up

One of the other more noticeable differences when it comes to electric cars is when it comes to charging. Instead of pulling over at a petrol station and filling up your car with petrol, you can charge your vehicle at home simply by plugging it in. If you need to top up at a charging station, these are often free or there are rapid charging points found at motorway services.

More and more motorists are making the switch to electric cars and quite rightly too. There are a few differences found when driving an electric car to be aware of, but these do not make driving any harder. Most motorists will quickly get used to it and perhaps find it to be much easier and less stressful than a traditional vehicle.
