Garage Floor Leveling Methods

1. Use of a leveling compound

Before using the leveling compound on your garage floor, you must first start by cleaning it. If there is oil on your garage floor, that can’t be washed away with an ordinary wash, you should abrade the concrete then vacuum it.

Thorough cleaning enables the leveling compound to adhere properly on your garage floor. Gauge the depressed areas on your garage floor using a straightedge and mark them with a pencil.

Apply the leveling compound on the marked parts and ensure there is uniformity. A straightedge could help you do that.

Let the leveling compound cure for about 24 hours. The curing time of concrete leveling compounds can vary depending on the manufacturer and the time is usually indicated on the package. When the surface/leveling compound is dry, you can apply paint or a sealer if necessary.

2. Slab jacking

Slab jacking is a technique used to repair sinking concrete and it could also help you with your uneven garage floor. The method is also referred to as mudjacking or concrete raising.

Slab jacking is done by injection. This is why you will need to involve the services of a flooring professional to level your garage floor.

First, the expert will conduct a series of measures to identify the affected slab(s). The concrete raising technician will then identify and mark specific areas for drilling holes – these holes will be filled with polyurethane or slurry. Some of the factors to consider while identifying the places to drill the holes into your garage floor include the elevation difference, location of cracks and joints, length of the garage floor to be raised, drainage conditions, and the subgrade.

A matrix of holes about 3 inches deep will be drilled into your garage floor surface. After the holes are drilled, you can either decide to use a mix of slurry or polyurethane foam compound to fill the holes. However, the most preferred compound to fill the holes is polyurethane foam compound – but it’s a bit expensive than slurry.

Again, when injecting slurry mix or polyurethane foam compound, the person doing the job must be very careful not to fill some holes with too much of the compound mix and others with less mixture.

After injecting the holes with either slurry mix or polyurethane foam compound, the holes should be patched with cement. This leaves room for the application of your desired sealer or paint if necessary.

Slab jacking has minimal environmental effects and can be done in any weather. It is also an inexpensive garage floor leveling method that guarantees instant results without any inconvenience.
