An Easy Guide to Waterproof Leather Work Boots

In the world of construction, our shoes can be considered as one of the most important items that we can wear. It is usually a part of the entire safety gear of most professions all around the world. However, its use is more apparent in construction sites and buildings. It makes up 25 percent of the “armor” that you need before entering this workplace slash battleground.

There are a lot of instances in any workplace wherein injuries can be very common. Even in a safer environment like an office, there are lots of opportunities for fate to deliver a painful blow to anyone. It can also be due to the carelessness of other people. In a rougher environment like construction grounds, minefields, emergencies and the like, this is going to be your best friend.

Common Problems at Work

It can be surprising really, but a lot of people usually forget where they are stepping on. It can be because of the thinking that everything would be safe. For example, nobody expects to step on a nail while working in a cube farm. However, in other situations, this can be a dire instance mainly because it can be a source of infection for the person. This is why working boots are important to combat these situations. This article discusses other important elements for safety.

Also, let us note that these boots are not very comfortable to use. It takes a lot of time before you get used to it, so calluses and lesions are very common. If these are left untreated or they continue, it can lead to a whole new set of problems. Fortunately, new pairs are being developed that are far more comfortable than it has ever been. The introduction of breathable leather has been ground-breaking in the world of shoemaking.

The Real Nemesis of Leather

There is another enemy of a leather boot or shoe though: water. Moisture from the air may not be damaging in the first few months, but you will see its effects long after it has taken place. However, we are referring to wetness, like being doused with water. Natural leather usually shrinks with water. After it dried, you will notice the outer layer cracking and breaking apart. This may not be as abrupt with high-quality leather, but it will still happen.

If you are looking for a good working boot, you need to find one that is already waterproof. Many brands offer this kind of advantage already because it is very convenient. However, if you have one of those that are not waterproof, then you need to do it yourself. For the best ultra dry shoes, this may need a little bit of effort.

First, though, you need to find dubbin wax as it is one of the few ways you can achieve this. Then, you need to check whether your shoes are pure leather. It should also be used only for work boots, as the regular leather footwear may need another type of conditioner.

  1. Clean your footwear as much as possible. There should be no visible dirt or grime on the shoes. These can inhibit the wax from penetrating the leather.
  2. Try to dry your shoes or boots as much as possible. To aid the wax, you can heat it using a hairdryer. It is the gentlest way of doing so since other heat sources can destroy the leather. Remember, it must not be too hot.
  3. Apply the wax scantily all around the shoe surface. Too much of the product can soften the leather even further and degrade its quality.
  4. Let it dry on its own. Do not aid the process by using a hairdryer or putting them under the sun. The wax needs a neutral temperature to work its magic and it needs around half to a full hour as well.
  5. Wipe your shoes with a clean towel or cloth.

Also, remember that not all shoes are made equally. If you are not confident doing it yourself, you can find a shop that can do it for you. However, you need to keep an eye on it, especially if you are rather fond of the pair. It only takes an hour, so you may want to just stay while they are working on it. That way, you can see the process as well.
